Empathy – Understand the position of the person communicating with you, stand in their shoes and see it from their perspective, emotions and beliefs.

Listen – Listen to the facts, the total message and understand what is being explained. Give your full attention to your team member and be silent when they are speaking. Make notes on your thoughts as they speak and even ask their permission to make notes beforehand so they understand what you are doing.

Good questions – Ask good open ended questions that show you have been listening and to help you understand if it wasn’t clear. Your question should encourage more communication.
